Scholarship for Engineering Students

Making education accessible for all is always a top priority for the nation and its policy makers. Given the social intricacies of our country, it is a humungous task to ensure that everyone is getting a fair share of opportunity to grow and prosper in life.

Time and again schemes are implemented for different segments of population especially for the schedule castes, schedule tribes and physically challenged. Many such schemes where both the government and private institutions offer scholarships and financial assistance to bright (but needy) students are currently underway.

The idea behind providing scholarships to students who are meritorious and belong to the above mentioned segment of population is that they continue their education irrespective of the barriers created by their social and physical constraints and eventually be at par in life with the rest of the population.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) recently announced that it will be offering 35 scholarships to engineering students belonging to schedule castes/ schedule tribes and the physically challenged category.

The criterion is that the student belonging to this segment must be pursuing a full-time engineering course from a government-recognized institution. He/ she must be in the third session in year 2010-2011 after meritoriously clearing their first two years. It must be noted that this scholarship is only available for select streams of engineering.

Developing new education avenues to build a strong nation

Investing in the human capital and retaining it to generate growth is focus of every government. Being a developing nation, India has a major interest in its human resource capital. As a nation, we cannot let go of a single opportunity to attract young minds and encourage them to contribute towards building the nation.

Every state has numerous government and private institutions dedicated to providing education in various streams. These institutes train a fair share of professionals for suitable public and private sector jobs and give them access to better life and career prospects.

For example: Himachal, one of the northern states known for its eternal beauty and tourism is fast becoming a hub of industry-oriented colleges. Baddi, a city in the foothills is an emerging pharmaceutical centre and has an Institute of Pharmacy and Engineering Sciences to provide specialized training to the youth of Himachal and its nearby states. Besides this Himachal government has announced that soon it will be opening two special colleges at Shimla and Dharamshala for providing programs in hydroelectric engineering- hydropower being one of the major assets of the state.

But then there are many factors that restrict the reach of the education system into the far corners of the country. Factors like inaccessible terrain, poverty, social apathy towards higher education in general are hurdles in imparting education. To maximize the reach of higher education and to open up vistas of opportunity for the youth of India more concerted efforts are needed.

Foreign language studies are quickly gaining an impressive reputation

The new age of information technology has launched a phenomenon called ‘offshoring’ and this has brought to our shores some very promising career opportunities. BPOs and KPOs are a result of offshoring and have emerged as major employers. Industry analysts estimated that the foreign language segment of the BPO and KPO industry will cross the USD $14 billion mark this year. The segment is still in its nascent stage in India but is set to grow in leaps and bounds in the coming years. If you have an inclination towards learning one more language besides your mother tongue then its the right time to do so to convert it into a successful career.

In addition to government-funded institutes and private institutes, there are several university departments across the country which are dedicated to teaching various foreign languages.

Jawaharlal Nehru University is the prominent centre for learning a foreign language. The department of Language Literature and Culture Studies of the university offers graduate and post graduate courses in several foreign languages. Languages such as French, German Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Russian, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese are taught here. At the end of the course, students are equipped to communicate in the language, perform translation and interpretation of documents and speech.

Another well known institute of teaching foreign languages is The English and Foreign Languages University located in Hyderabad. This institute has been the focal point of learning for past many decades for foreign language students.

Besides the abovementioned illustrious schools of languages, you can explore the private institutes that provide certifications in languages like Spanish, German, French, Japanese and much more. Under-graduate courses are also available. Therefore, you can begin learning a foreign language while keeping an eye on the lucrative jobs offered by BPOs and KPOs after you complete your 10+2.
